WORK ENVIRONMENT:-

As a fashion model, you will carry out the promotion of accessories and clothing to clients, fashion buyer and media. You may represent the items in the catalogues, fashion shows, magazines, advertising promotion and newspaper.

You can do specialization in various types of modeling like:

  • catwalk and fashion
  • advertising, photographic and television commercials
  • promotional modeling signifying non-fashion items at trade shows and product launches
  • internal live modeling for clothing wholesaler and designers

If fashion shows you will present the garments before of the spectators by moving alongside a catwalk, turning and walking.

In photographic, advertising and commercial modeling you will:

  • give a pose to the photographers on the site or in the studio
  • perform or convey lines in television commercials
  • pursue directions from photographers

If you are working as a domestic live model, designer will fit the clothes on you in the workshop, and you will illustrate the complete clothing to the personal customer and fashion buyer. When you are not modeling, you will have to carry out the secretarial and basic reception duties.

As a catwalk and photographic mode, you will work together with the stylists, make-up and hair artists, directors and producers. You will also spend much of your time in casting for jobs, looking after your appearance, and making the contact with the agency.

QUALIFICATION, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:-

All you require is a right 'look' and good appearance for becoming a model. It is not necessary that you should have a formal qualification.

You should be balanced and tall with features like healthy skin, hairs and teeth. As recommended by the Association of Model Agents (AMA) you should have to following measurements:

MALES:

  • waist- 30 - 32 inch i.e. 76- 80cm
  • height- 6 feet i.e. 1.83m
  • chest- 38 - 40 inch i.e. 97- 102cm

FEMALES:

  • height- at least five feet eight inches i.e. 1.72m
  • bust-waist-hip measurement- not more than 34-24-34 inches i.e. 86-61-86cms

The Association of Model Agents also provides plans for larger size models. An agency might accept you for promotional or photogenic work if you are not having the features which is required for fashion standard model providing you possess a proper look for probable clients.

You will start your career by sending your details of your measurements and photographs to the modeling agency. Most of the modeling agencies also make use of talent scouts, who search the people for modeling career.

Salary can differ. Many fashion models work on the temporary basis all through the agent and are remunerated for every job. Rates can differ from around $ 50 to $ 1,000 a booking, and agents generally take 20% from the earning. Models who work in the fashion houses might earn between $ 13,000 and $ 18,000 every year.

WORKING CONDITIONS:-

You may work in the showrooms, fashion show venues, stores, photographic studios and many other locations as per the requirements of the photo shoots.

Working hours can be irregular and long, as per the amount of your work.

This job might involve a lot of travel sometimes out of the country to remain present at fashion shows, casting and photo shoots.

DIFFERENT OPPORTUNITIES:-

You will basically be freelance and find the work through a modeling agency. Many large agencies are based in London. There are also chances for everlasting internal models with retail and wholesales fashion business.

Competition is tough, and being acknowledged on an agency's books is no assurance of normal modeling work.

You will make improvement in your career by developing a good portfolio and gaining contacts and experience. There are little jobs for models in their 30s and grown-up.
