WORK ENVIRONMENT:-

Being a fitness instructor, you will have to guide and arrange the individual and group exercise programs to assist the people in improving their health and fitness. You will give instructions to variety of activities or concentrate on a specific area like:

  • weight training,
  • keep fit
  • yoga
  • aquacise (water exercise)
  • Pilates

Your work will comprise of:

  • perform consultations, fitness assessments and introductions with the new customers
  • show routines for customers to pursue
  • demonstrate the customer about the machine use and free weights
  • oversee the customer to ensure that they are doing exercise properly and safely
  • directing the group exercise classes like aerobics, circuit training and spinning
  • plan special exercise programs

You might also present and advice on health eating and lifestyle. You can work with specialist group of people like people, children or old people with disabilities, or clients passed on by doctors.

In small clubs you might also perform routine duties like health and safety checks, pool operations or reception.

QUALIFICATION, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:-

To meet the criteria as a fitness instructor you can either:

  • finishing a nationally acknowledged qualification earlier than initial work
  • begin as an assistant instructor and finish work related qualification

Nationally-recognized qualification

The Certificate in Fitness Instructing is accepted by the Register of Exercise Professional (REPs), and is the preferred industry standard. It is awarded by VTCT, CYQ, OCR, EDI, City and Guilds, NCFE and Lifetime Awarding.

You can also select to concentrate on exercise to music, physical and aqua activity for children, gym. The qualification will permit you to obtain Level 2 on the REPs (called as 'Exercise Register'), which will demonstrate employers that you are proficient and skilled for your job.

Earlier than working as an instructor, you will also require public liability insurance and a certification in first aid which includes a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification. Work-based qualifications

You might start your work as an assistant instructor and finish qualification whilst working under the supervision of the skilled instructor. When you have finished with your qualification you can make an application for level 2 entry on the REPS.

You might be able to obtain the job through the apprenticeship scheme. TRAINING DETAILS:-

Once you have a level 2 qualification you can continue to finish the certificate in Personal Training (Level 3) awarded by CYQ, C and G, Active IQ, NCFE, VTCT and OCR. You can also finish industry approved awards presented by several universities and employers.

When you have finished the main qualification you can join the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) at 3rd Level. You can also carry out additional units in exercise recommendation.

The Specialist Instructor qualification (Level 4) which includes units on planning and adopting physical activity programs for the following areas:

  • mental health
  • cardiac disease
  • diabetes
  • stroke
  • obesity
  • back pain
  • falls prevention

You should be qualified and skilled at 3rd level earlier than starting the 4th level.

WORKING CONDITIONS:-

As a permanent fitness instructor, you will normally work for 40 hours in a week, frequently on a shift basis or rota basis which covers up weekends, mornings and evenings. Most instructors work recreational or freelance.

You can work in health clubs or leisure centers. If you are self-employed, you might also take classes in places like community centers, school halls so will require to travel in the vicinity.

DIFFERENT OPPORTUNITIES:-

You can do the job in the leisure centers, health clubs or gyms or be freelancer. A competition for the jobs is tough.

With experience and higher qualification, you can make advancement to the position of senior fitness instructor, then to the management. Other alternative can be to shift into training or coaching a sport. You can also begin your own fitness clubs.
