A project accountant handles the budget and financial aspects of a project. The project accountant is also known as cost accountant. The main job responsibility of a project accountant is to oversee and maintain the financial records of a project. One can work as a project accountant in both private and government sectors. The responsibilities of a project accountant include preparing and maintaining account details of a project in the system, reviewing project expenses submitted by the team/clients, maintaining project related financial data and records, closing of account upon completion of the project, evaluating project expense variance, preparing total project revenue report, conducting cost assessments of the project, conducting financial analysis and authorizing access to the project account.

It is necessary for a candidate to hold at least a bachelor's degree in accounting with a major in taxation, financial accounting, or cost accounting. A project accountant should be well versed with data management software, project accounting, and project contracts.
