WORK ENVIRONMENT:-

An operating department practitioner (ODP) will give support to the operating theater staff and take care of the patients before, during and after the surgery. Your duties and responsibilities will include:

  • examining machinery
  • making the operating equipments and theater like instruments, drips, swabs and dressings
  • checking the cleanliness of the theaters
  • ensuring that the specialist equipments are assessable for particular procedures

  • maintaining the accurate records
  • giving surgical team with required items during the operation

Your work will involve evaluating the patients earlier than joining a surgical ward and analyzing the concern they received at every stage. QUALIFICATION, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:-

You should have a Diploma of Higher Education in Operating Department Practice recognized by the Health Professions Council (HPC) before working as a ODP. You must also be a member of College of Operating Department Practitioners (CODP) and you must be accepted on the state register.

WORKING CONDITIONS:-

You will generally work for 38 hours every week in a shift system including your nights, evening and weekends. On-call-duty and overtime is also common in order to handle the emergencies. Amateur work might be probable.

You will generally work in sterile conditions in pre-operative anesthetic areas, recovery rooms and operating theaters. These areas are light and clean but not hot. You will have to wear a mask and surgical clothing.
