WORK ENVIRONMENT:-

Locksmiths are responsible for installing, repairing, selling and maintaining lock for the businesses and homes. The duties and responsibilities of the locksmiths would classically comprise:

  • Repairing and maintaining the locks and other devices of security
  • Fit locks to the windows and doors
  • Cut the keys and make new keys

  • Responsible for fitting the combination locks and timing policy to safe
  • Give 24 hours service to the people for locking their business and homes
  • Give an opinion to the customer on the most appropriate locks or safety devices for their requirements
  • Give urgent situation service after break-ins, changing locks, securing doors and resetting systems

It is also possible for you to set up and maintain the other security mechanisms and systems and fit security devices like CCTV.

You can concentrate in a particular area of key cutting for historic locks and repairing.

QUALIFICATION, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:-

You can take training from British Locksmiths Institute (BLI), which is the branch of Master Locksmiths Association (MLA). The MLA is recognized as the reliable body for locksmith by the police, the Association of British Insurers and the British Standards Institutes.

You will be asked to apply for the student membership of British Locksmiths Institute before joining the course. You will also require a CRB i.e. Criminal Record Bureau clearance and two references.

It will be helpful if you are having past experience in engineering or carpentry.

As an option, you can begin as an apprentice with a home company or with a area monopoly. WORKING CONDITIONS:-

You will normally work for more than 40 hours every week, which will also include weekends and evenings. If you are working from the firm who is giving 24 hours service you might have to work even in the night shifts to give response to the crisis situations.
