WORK ENVIRONMENT:-

As an electricity generation worker you will work and look after the equipment in power stations which produce electricity in various ways like:

  • coal
  • hydro-electricity
  • nuclear power
  • biomass fuels
  • gas
  • wind power

Your duties will mainly include:

  • using and running machinery on the shop floor distantly from a control room
  • refurbishing and identifying faults
  • succeeding security events and environmental good practice
  • deal with the materials which are use to generate electricity
  • ensure regular equipment testing
  • following severe security procedures all the time
  • putting contingency strategies into practice

You can also work in the power stations of maintaining crew, repairing mechanical, electronic and electrical equipment in plant.

QUALIFICATION, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:-

It is not necessary that you require a qualification to work in electricity generation, but you will definitely need a good standard of general education and you will have to the benefit with some GCSEs or similar. You will check the entry requirement with individual employers.

Though, you will enter into this type of occupation through an apprenticeship scheme. For this, the employer demands for at least 4 GCSEs (A-C) which includes English, Mathematics and other relevant subjects like engineering, science and technology.

TRAINING DETAILS:-

You will be given training by your employer, through a mixture of education on the job and taking short courses at a training center. Your training will include the opportunity to get the following work-based National Vocational Qualifications:

  • Engineering Technology Operations (Level 1, 2 and 3)
  • Engineering Technology Maintenance (Level 2 and 3)

Most of the employers would like you to record in a proper safety passport scheme to show that you have the familiarity and safety awareness to work on site. Appropriate safety passport scheme for electrical energy distribution comprise of:

SALARY AND OTHER BENEFITS:-

WORKING CONDITIONS:-

You are required to work basically for more than 38 hours with overtime or you can work in shifts to give cover 24 hours every day. You require being on standby for exclaiming in case of emergencies.

The working atmosphere will differ from clean control room to refurbish workshop. Some of the work can be in cramped or hot conditions. You will be required to wear protective clothing like safety boots, hard hats etc
