Dear Ms. Cook,

Professor Dale Thompson, a former colleague from my 9 years teaching history at the University of San Diego, faxed me a copy of the posting for Vice President of Academic Affairs. Because I have maintained my high respect for USD over my years in Colorado, I am enclosing my resume for the search committee's consideration.

As my resume indicates, while at USD, I served on a committee to develop a cross-disciplinary approach to European studies. Since that time, I became a full professor, chaired the History Department and was then promoted to Dean of the College of Arts and Letters at McDowell Carlson University. I am proud of my accomplishments in this latter position. Some of these accomplishments include:

introducing several successful cross-disciplinary courses;
maintaining the College of Arts and Letters in the black despite some cutbacks in funding; and
serving as an advisor to President Art Lang.

I believe that I have the experience and qualifications to be a real asset to USD in the position of Vice President of Academic Affairs. Also, San Diego became "home" to me in a way that Louisville never has.
