WORK ENVIRONMENT:-

Phlebotomists are the expert clinical support workers who are responsible for captivating samples of blood from patients basically in the hospital for examining in laboratories. The consequences of the tests are the most important means of diagnosing sickness.

Being a phlebotomist, your duties and responsibilities will include:

  • giving explanation of the methods to the patients

QUALIFICATION, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:-

You will generally not require any particular qualification for becoming an apprentice phlebotomist. However, some employers might give preference if you have GCSE in the subjects like Mathematics, English and Science.

It is necessary that you have a driving license.

TRAINING DETAILS:-

You will normally be given training on the job, which will take 6 months and include:

  • the position of the phlebotomy in the department of pathology
  • the importance of codes of practice and professional standards
  • blood collection methods
  • features of blood labeling
  • selecting proper sites for obtaining samples of blood
  • health and safety

After finishing with the training you might be given a award of Certificate of Competence, which will help you to working without administration.

You might also be supported to work for Level 2 and 3 National Vocational Qualification in Health (Blood Donor Support), or take a short term course with the National Association of Phlebotomists, for instance in Pediatric phlebotomy.

SKILLS and KNOWLEDGE:-

  • sympathy, with the capability of putting the anxious patients at easiness
  • balanced hand and good practical skills
  • outstanding communication skills i.e. both written and oral
  • capable of working peacefully even when under pressure
  • understanding of health and safety matters
  • respect for sensitive and confidential information
  • capability of carrying out the procedures and instructions properly

  • good team working skills

SALARY AND OTHER BENEFITS:-

  • Phlebotomists can be paid between $ 13,500 to $ 16,500.
  • If experienced for instance in pediatric phlebotomy and specialist skills, this can go up to around $ 18,500.

WORKING CONDITIONS:-

You will be working from Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm and in weekly for 38 hours. Recreational hours might also be feasible.

You will have to pursue severe health and safety procedures, which will comprise wearing disposal gloves, while taking and managing blood samples. You might also require a Hepatitis B vaccination.

You will generally work in the outpatient health center or hospital word.

DIFFERENT OPPORTUNITIES:-

You will get the jobs in the NHS, but it is possible for you to work in the private health care sector.

As your experience grows, you can achieve the position of the manager or leader.
