Work Environment:

As a court usher, you'd ensure that everybody concerned with a case is there and understands what they've to do throughout the hearing.

Being a court usher, your tasks would compose:

  • maintaining order in public sectors
  • arranging the court-room
  • transferring messages between legal advisors and lawyers
  • making sure that lawyer, witnesses and defendants are there

Qualification, Education and Experience:

Generally, you don't require official qualifications to be a court usher. And the courts would be concerned with your experience and personnel qualities.

You'll require experience of coping with people and managing difficult issues. A backdrop in Armed Forces or police might be specifically useful. You might have a benefit if you've experience in administrative work.

If your work includes traveling between courts, you might be expected to have a driving license.

Training Details:

You'll be given training at the work, from an experienced usher and progressively undertaking additional duties as you get experience.

Generally, this training will compose short courses including equality awareness, managing difficult circumstances, and security.

Working Conditions:

You'd work weekly for around 38 hours, from 8.30am to 5pm, on weekdays, sometimes having late sessions if required. You may also work on part time basis.

You'd work within courtrooms and also reception desks and offices in the court building. You might occasionally have to voyage from court to court.

Being a sworn usher, you might have to do overnight stay away from house into a hotel. You'd put on a calf length gown and dark clothes in court.

Different Opportunities:

Within Wales and England, you'd work with HCMS (Her Majesty's Courts-Service), which supervises all crown courts and magistrate's court. Within Northern Ireland you'd be working with Northern Ireland Court-Service.
