Work Environment:

Being an advocates' clerk, you'd arrange administration and work load for an advocate's group.

Your daily duties would be based on your experience level, but may comprise:

  • marketing and endorsing the practice to draw the attention of clients
  • photocopying, filing and handling telephone calls and letters
  • hiring and training subordinates
  • handling accounts, invoices and payments

  • managing diary of advocate and arranging their court-appearances
  • arranging the law-library
  • suggesting appropriate advocate for a specific case
  • organizing meetings with clients and solicitors
  • carrying papers and books to and from court
  • negotiating fees of advocate
  • studying information to assist advocates to get ready for cases
Every group of advocates is administered by individual clerk and furthermore employs some deputy clerks.

Qualification, Education and Experience:

You'll require a minimum of Higher English, though many groups will want you to contain 3 to 5 Higher comprising English, to be an advocates' clerk. Several advocates' clerks hold a degree in law or SQA HND/HNC.

You might have a benefit with work experience into management, court administration, accounts or legal secretarial work.

Training Details:

You'd begin as a deputy-clerk into a group of advocates.

You'd be given training at the work by an experienced clerk. And sometimes your employer might also organize short courses.

Salary and Other Benefits:

  • Generally, remunerations for deputy clerks are about £23,000-£29,000 for a year.
  • And senior advocates' clerks can receive around £30,000 to £41,000 annually.
If deputy clerks work over 36 hours a week, then they are paid with overtime allowances.

Working Conditions:

You'd work from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., on weekdays. You might be required to work for extended hours if your advocates are working on a difficult case.

The majority of clerks are working within an office by the Library of Advocates at Parliament-House in Edinburgh. You'd employ some of working time giving visits to solicitor's offices and court. Formal outfit is anticipated.

Different Opportunities:

You can work with FSL (Faculty Services Ltd), a firm which gives support-services to advocates.

There are eleven FSL groups, which every group work for around thirty to forty advocates. Every group includes as a minimum one deputy-clerk and one advocates' clerk.
