Work Environment:

Being a health and safety adviser, it would be your aim to avoid disasters, harms and health problems in the place of work. You would form policies of health and safety, and ensure that employers and workers make them into practice and follow safety laws.

Qualification, Education and Experience:

To be a health and safety adviser, you can either study for health and safety requirements at the same time as you are working, or you could obtain a full-time course earlier than looking for work.

You can find it valuable to have earlier knowledge of risk assessment, or surroundings in manufacturing, construction, engineering or scientific work previous to moving into health and safety.

If health and safety are new to you, or if health and safety is a single one part of your work, you can begin by taking relevant level 3 qualifications part-time or during distance learning. Qualifications contain:

  • National Examinations Board: Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) (Level 3) National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety
  • British Safety Council (BSC) (Level 3) Certificate: Occupational Safety and Health. You may then improve to more superior experience as your responsibility level will grow. You will frequently require a higher level of requirement recognized by the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) to work as a full-time health and safety officer. Recognized qualifications include:
  • BSC (Level 6) Diploma: Occupational Safety and Health
  • Full- or part-time university degrees and postgraduate courses: occupational health and safety.
  • NEBOSH (Level 6) National Diploma: Occupational Health and Safety
  • NVQ (levels 4 and 5): Occupational Health and Safety Practice

Training Details:

You would build up your skills on the work and also give attention to courses short training organized by in- local colleges, company training departments, or health and safety specialists.

You might join IOSH as a Technician or Graduate member, depending on your experience and knowledge in health and safety. Being a Graduate member, you can work towards Chartered Membership of IOSH, by participating in a two-year Initial Professional Development (IPD) scheme. Salary and Other Benefits:

  • Initial salaries can be around $20,000 to $22,000 a year.

Working Conditions:

Your usual work hours would be 9 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday; even though in various industries you may work in shifts or be on call in case of disasters or industrial accidents.
